Quarterly Meeting of April 22, 2008
April 22, 2008—The 2008 general membership meeting of the Vermilion
Historical Society was held at the new library in Abbeville at 5:30 p.m.
on April 22, 2008, pursuant to notice to all members. In the absence of
the secretary the reading of the minutes of the previous meeting was
waived.
The treasurer, Gary Theall, presented the financial report.
After paying one-third of the cost of printing Ken Dupuy's book,
Journeys into the Past, the Society has $52,513.07 cash in the bank,
$73,386.01 in the form of unsold inventory, for total assets of
$125,899.08. Liabilities are $1,125.00 in commissions owed to the
Alliance Center, $755.00 in commissions owed to the Depot, and $160.30
representing excess funds raised for the Veterans' project on Donald
Frederick Boulevard, which will be held for future projects of that
kind.
Charles Dill, Jr., who is not only a board member of the
Society, but was on the Tree Dedication committee, thanked the Society
for partnering with Keep Abbeville Beautiful and handling the
fundraising and historical research for the Veterans' project.
Board member Betty Girourd was called upon to make some
announcements. She said that the Kaplan Museum is hosting a coffee and
music event on April 26, 2008, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at 206
Cushing Avenue, Kaplan, featuring Schel Reaux. The event is free and
coffee is to be suppled by Mello Joy. She also announced that the Kaplan
Museum will host an event entitled "New Harmonies: Celebrating American
Roots Music" from September 5, 2008, to October 15, 2008, at 311 Cushing
Avenue, Kaplan. The exhibit is provided by the Smithsonian Institution.
Everyone is invited to see and hear the exhibit.
Gary Theall reported that we still owe about $16,000 to
finish paying for publishing Ken Dupuy's book. The final version of the
book is now in the hands of the printer, and we should have the books in
our hands soon.
We ordered 400 model courthouses, but the manufacturer sent
only 312. We paid for the 312, and the other 88 are now on their way to
us.
The next order of business was the election of the board of
directors. On behalf of the nominating committee, Gary Theall stated
that he had contacted the existing board members, and every one of them
expressed a desire to remain on the board for another year.
Patricia Heard, who is the present secretary, asked to be relieved of
the office of secretary, but would like to stay on the board. On motion
by Gary Theall and second by Jeanne DeValcourt, all of the current board
members were re-elected by acclamation. Gary asked for volunteers
to hold the office of secretary, but when no one offered, he suggested
that his office of treasurer be combined with the office of secretary.
On motion by Sylvia Putnam and second by Betty Girouard, Gary Theall was
elected to the office of secretary by acclamation.
The board for the coming year is therefore as follows:
René Breaux, President [Gueydan]
Margaret Chauvin Steen Villemez, Vice
President [Abbeville]
Gary Theall, Secretary-Treasurer
[Abbeville]
Velta Bourgeois [Abbeville]
Sue Butaud [Erath]
Charles Dill, Jr. [Abbeville]
Lloyd Doré III [Abbeville]
Kenneth A. Dupuy [Maurice]
Betty Girouard [Kaplan]
Patricia Saltzman Heard [Gueydan]
Barbara H. Hebert [North of
Abbeville]
Meceal Hollier Smith [Gueydan]
Sylvia Brown Putnam [Abbeville]
Joseph G. Vallee [Abbeville]
Alberta Villien Winch [Maurice]
Gary Theall and Ken Dupuy then showed a PowerPoint
presentation of the "History of the Abbeville Meridional," after
which the meeting was adjourned at 7:30 p.m.
