Joe Daze Blacksmith Shop Exposed:

Jan. 31, 2003—At the invitation of Dr. Chip Young, Ken Dupuy and Gary Theall poked around in the dirt exposed by the recent demolition of the McClellan building behind the Young Eye Clinic.  Before it was the McClellan building, it was the site of the Joe Daze Blacksmith Shop.  Ken Dupuy says, "According to the Meridional of 1-14-1905, he had just opened his 'blacksmith and carriage shop in the old Badon house, just north of Wall's hotel.'

"A. W. Badon, Abbeville’s mayor in 1872, 73, 74, 75 [yearly elections] had obtained this property in the early 1870s. He died in 1877. So, the house in the photo may have dated to the 1870s, if not before.

"This property is behind Young's Eye Clinic, where once stood the Wall House, for those of you who may not be familiar with the lot."

Ken produced the following photograph of the site:

[Notice a glimpse of the Bank of Abbeville at the far left.]  Here is Ken conducting an archaeological survey of the site:

The amateur archaeologists turned up a few horseshoes, some square nails, some buggy parts, some buttons, some curious items of unknown functionality, some broken bottle fragments, a pocket knife, and one intact Vaseline jar:

Horseshoes, springs, nails, etc.

These items will be cleaned up and put on display at the Alliance Center, 200 North Magdalen Square, Abbeville.
