Gueydan Museum Holds Grand Opening
April 6, 2003—A large crowd attended the Grand Opening of the Gueydan Museum last night at 6:00 p.m., an official "Louisiana Purchase Bicentennial Event." Dignitaries present included state Senator Fred Hoyt, Gueydan Mayor Chris Theriot, former Mayor René Breaux, and school board member Bill Searle. The featured exhibit was a display of black and white photographs of France taken by award-winning photographer Lee Estes, who ran a tour company in north Louisiana for many years and had the opportunity to visit many foreign countries. French language advocate Richard Guidry amused the crowd with a talk on "How French are we?" comparing and contrasting the people of France with the Cajuns of Louisiana. Afterwards, the featured photographer addressed the crowd and led a tour of his works on display, a remarkable collection of creative and artistic photographs of French landmarks and people, many of which have won awards. The pictures will be on display until May 3, 2003. Below are some scenes from the Grand Opening.
